Ceci n’est pas un calendrier

True to tradition, we created a state-of-the-art printed calendar for 2017. The calendar stands out through it unique combination of contemporary art and graphic design, supreme print quality and vivid enhancement techniques.

This is not a calendar Ceci n'est pas un calendrier. That is the title of the 2017 Agfa Graphics calendar. With a nod to Ceci n’est pas une pipe (This is not a pipe), the famous painting by Belgian painter René Magritte, it expresses how what you see is not always what you get. Or in this case, what you get is more than what you would think at first...

Calendars have planned obsolescence: their shelf life is limited to twelve months. Their days are literally numbered. As the year wanes, so does a calendar’s usefulness. Calendars are good at counting, not at recounting. They live by the numbers and forget the word or the image. They dutifully chronicle the steady march of time but they lack imagination.

Not this one. Ceci n’est pas un calendrier.

This Agfa Graphics calendar is meant to outlive 2017. It is an object of fascination: an exclusive combination of timeless aesthetics and modern printing technology. Every single page of this calendar is a unique work of art, made by a renowned artist. In addition, each of the twelve months showcases a visual that was made using a different artistic technique.

Agfa Graphics translated those creative images onto paper. The result is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. Because these printed masterpieces are yours to have and to hold. You can cut them out of the calendar and frame them. Start your own gallery with a dozen works of art, courtesy of Agfa Graphics.

Sustainable innovation

We want to tread lightly, yet leave a permanent impression. The 2017 Agfa Graphics calendar reflects this mission as it has sustainable innovation as its major leitmotiv.

Agfa Graphics is committed to sustainable innovation that focuses on ecology, economy, and extra convenience—or ECO³. We aim at developing cleaner and cost-effective solutions that are easier to operate and maintain, including ecological printing plates, as well as smart processing and clean-out technologies that reduce waste and decrease or eliminate chemistry.

Power of Print

Each print product has a luxury dimension through the way in which it refers to art, creativity and the use of unique and refined techniques and technologies. Like its predecessors, the 2017 edition of the Agfa Graphics calendar highlights the creative and luxurious aspects of print.
This calendar is a printed product which is almost a work of art. It is fine sample of and a real tribute to the power of print. For its creation, we used our state-of-the-art prepress solutions, including advanced screening and color management software, as well as our ecological, convenient and cost-efficient printing plates. These were supplemented by screen printing and by a wide gamut of enhancement techniques, including metallic and structure inks, hot foil printing, and embossing. Add to that a range of premium-quality recycled papers, and you get an eye-popping, unique printed product. Printing as an art.

Making of

More than 82,000 sheets of paper, 2750 meters of wire-o-binding, 286,000 punch holes…That is what it takes to create a top-notch calendar.

Created in cooperation with

Design:
Marie Verdurmen (Antwerpen, Belgium) is a mixed media visual artist: she has mastered a host of different techniques. She gives each of her works its own voice: the whisper of watercolor painting, the rip of a collage or the rich tonality of oil painting. Marie made the visuals for ten out of twelve months for this calendar.

Contributing artists:
Harry Laureys is fascinated by translating motion into still images and by capturing the energy of movement on the page. He built the mechanical wind drawing device that generated December’s unique visual.

Kahtleen Steegmans prefers visual over verbal communication. She uses photography, illustration and painting to express aesthetic and ethical opinions about topics ranging from the personal (her private life) to the political (feminism).

Seigetsu Wada is a teacher of Japanese calligraphy at a number of organizations in Kamakura, Japan. Calligraphy is the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner with a broad tip instrument such as a brush. Wada Seigetsu aims to express her personality in her art, according to her motto “You are what you create”. She is the mother of Yumiko Wada, Marketing Communications Manager for Agfa Graphics in Japan.

Print coordination, printing and finishing:
With over 70 years of experience, Belgium based printer die Keure (Brugge, Belgium) is an award-winning, family-owned printing and publishing company. The company specializes in printing the highest quality art books, exhibition, auction and product catalogs and a comprehensive variety of art, photography, fashion, music, art, architecture, and life-style magazines.

Production notes

All prepress work was done using Agfa Graphics’ Apogee workflow software. Energy Elite Eco digital thermal plates were imaged on an Avalon platesetter with Sublima screening software, processed in an Elantrix and printed on a Manroland Evolution 5-color press. The calendar was printed on a selection of high-quality papers from Arjowiggins.
