Apogee Impose at 354

Apogee Impose is really a great product

Adam and Ian Drew
joint managing directors at 354

354 started out as a family business some 35 years ago. Brothers Ian and Adam Drew took over the management of 354 as it became an independent company in 2010, and in these three years annual turnover has doubled to £3 million. The Basildon based company, staffed with 23 persons, prides itself on producing consistent quality work, which is essential to win more business from their existing customers.

Most of the plant list was inherited when Adam and Ian Drew took control of the business. One area in which the company has re-invested is pre-press.
"We take a great deal of pride and effort in colour matching, regardless of paper stock or the press on which a job is being printed," explained Adam Drew, joint managing director at 354. "One of the reasons we are able to achieve this consistency is because we have invested in Agfa Graphics' Apogee workflow solution. The colour management application has helped us to increase one customer's turnover from £30k per month to over £100k," he enthused.

"We pride ourselves in the amount of professional care and attention to detail we give to achieve the quality results we offer our customers and Apogee makes this much easier and faster. Thanks to Apogee Inksave, in combination with colour management, we achieved reduced setoff and drying times. We have used another workflow solution in the past but we are moving with the times and always try to react to what our clients want. I would add that Apogee Impose is really a great product," stated Ian Drew, joint managing director.
Actually, the number 354 is the Pantone colour for green. The company puts environmental responsibility at the heart of its business. All printing plates are Agfa Graphics' chemistry-free Azura, which have helped to significantly reduce not only chemical waste but also water usage.
The company holds ISO-14001 accreditation as well as the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) and PEFC accreditations to ensure all of its paper comes from a sustainable source. 354's environmental management system allows it to monitor and constantly reduce its impact on the environment. The following are some examples of novel ways of waste recycling:

  • Aluminium from printing plates - turned into engine blocks
  • Plastic cores from ink tins - made into garden furniture and underground pipes
  • Inks - used to ignite blast furnaces for incinerating hospital waste

354 also prides itself in offering a total mailing service and is one of a handful of companies accredited to ISO 27001 for information security management. 354 can, therefore, guarantee the safety of the data and mailing it is handling. Each of these official certificates are important because they tend to give our customers a kind of piece of mind.

"Our latest investment is Apogee StoreFront, which will enable each of our customers to have designated and secure shop windows via the web to a host of print items and other merchandise that they can order from 354 at any time. Apogee will also fit into our future vision: we'd like to streamline the whole process by tying it into our MIS system. We are a forward thinking company and really see Apogee as one of our flagship products," concluded Adam Drew.
